Might the current equivalent be the trailer park? Although Bubba Mabry lives in a motel.

BTW, I just received a Britnoir I ordered, Liza Cody's _Dupe_ (1980), the first Anna Lee for me. The front cover says "Now a major television series." I can't imagine a London Lassassin TV show. Is this a way different protagonist?

Joy, who'd tell some recent rural noir stories she knows, if her fingers weren't too tired to type capitals
