Okay. This list began life as a response to a new rara-avian seeking opinions as to the top two books in the genre. Top two became top ten. The end result was the following, which is as odd for its inclusions (Charles Brockden Brown?, "Grimhaven") as it is for its omissions (no Goodis or Woolrich). Anyway, in 1998 the rara-avians who voted believed these were the best titles they had read. Apologies for any typos/spelling mistakes.
