I haven't read THIEVES LIKE US yet so I can't compare the two but I have read HUNGRY MEN which I think would have to be the title you're referring to. It's not a crime novel, IIRC, but rather about scuffling & unemployed jazz musicians (white, IIRC) trying to get by during the Depression. Not exactly HB, more social realist, I think. Well worth the reading just don't be expecting action & thrills.
