How about Mike Hammer and Velda? Mike's edged toward the psychotic a time or two, particularly in the climax of ONE LONELY NIGHT where he convinces himself he's been chosen by God to wipe communism off the face of the planet.

And while his secretary, Velda, doesn't crack wise all that often, she IS an honest-to-God licensed PI.
