RARA-AVIS: Re: Arkady & Apocalypse

"yob tvoi mat' (using the informal rather than the formal 'your')"

That was the plural---all yo' mamas. Thanks, Victoria.

Isn't "yob" old British slang for a criminal? Anyone know how that came into English?

Miker: The Ride of the Valkyries (flying shieldmaidens who carry slain heroes from the battlefield up to Valhalla), and T.S. Eliot, The Hollow Men: "We are the hollow men/We are the stuffed men/Leaning together/Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!..." It goes downhill from there. Conrad's "Mistah Kurtz--he dead" stands as a subhead.

I was surprised by the director's cut of Apocalypse Now because, as I remember, it's so much less anti-American than the original release. Which doesn't make it complimentary, but is an improvement.

Cheers,

Sally
