hi charlie,

sorry for the misunderstanding. after reading the sentence again, i see perfectly what you meant.

and i guess the thread involving definition of hard- boiled (and noir) is getting on some people's nerves, and i'm sorry for that. but i came to this group thru a "mysteries" link, and didn't have a clue as to what the hardboiled genre was, so i'm naturally interested in its definition, and don't consider an in-depth discussion of it to be trivial or meaning- less.

i appreciate jim doherty's and everybody else's even- headed discussion.

Hmm, looking at that again I think I could have expressed it a bit better. What I meant was it is possible for a noir novel to contain no HB characters. I didn't mean to suggest any kind of mutually exclusive thing going on there.

I also agree with the poster who said this argument is meaningless. But like he also says, it's just a game. And even if thrashing out the terminology proves fruitless, at least it gets us to look at the texts more closely.

What else was I going to say? Oh yeah... As well as being dark and sinister in ambience, I think for a novel to be noir it must exhibit a streak of fatalism.
