The phrase is "canary in a cathouse." I'm not entirely sure what it means, but I'm guessing it has something to do with being afraid in the enemy's camp. It is also the title of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr's first short story compilation, which I just found out was a Gold Medal paperback.
