RARA-AVIS: Jay Gatsby

Terrill (and list)--

My thanks to Terrill for giving his reasons for naming Gatsby as a candidate for top 100 Hardboiled characters--I'm sure they'll show up someplace else today.

I have read "The Great Gatsby" four or five times, and I think it is one of the best books in English, but most of Jay Gatsby's hardboiledness is implied backstory and told from a distance. To me, he is the ultimate sentimental boob--far from
"without sentimentality."

I'd call him a somewhat tragic figure, but hardboiled? Nah . . . especially if you read between the lines that Gatsby was a great self-promoter.

Just another opinion.

But absolutly leave him on the list for a vote.
