RARA-AVIS: thompson's getaway

hi everybody!

well, i just finished thompson's _getaway_. loved it all the way up to the end. but i couldn't find the idea of the el ray place to be anything but ab- surd and ridiculous and a rotten ending to a good story. the ending was a mockery of everything so vividly and well portrayed earlier in the book.

i liked the way he characterized doc, and all the pleasantries on the outside and the churning within. especially the situation with beynon and carol. and i liked the way he wrote about carol's feelings of insecurity and fear. rudy was good too.

some questions: what was that deal with the air pump attached to the 22 rifle that he used to kill the guard? was that some kind of homemade silencer? i got no idea how it was used. and was the death of rudy's assistant in the bank robbery a planned thing? if yes, why?
