Someone wrote an essay about Thompson (maybe Stephen King) where they stated, "At the end of every Jim Thompson novel, all the characters go to Hell, sometimes literally." The ending to THE GETAWAY veers off so sharply into the realm of fantasy that I have no trouble believing that Hell is what Thompson had in mind.
