Why Boston? I think it goes a little further than "natives"
writing about it. Linda Barnes is from Detroit, originally,
and I'm from New Jersey, not seeing Boston till my first year
of law school.
To some extent it's the mix of ethnicities, traditionally
living in very distinctive neighborhoods. Then, once the
"boom" times started around 1976 with the Bicentennial and
the opening of Quincy Market, tourists became as numerous as
college students. Rampant inflation during the Carter
Administration hit hard, though we avoided most of the
recession in the early Reagan years.
I just think there's a lot of volatility here, though the
"Beatles" metaphor might apply: Boston, thanks to its winters
and all the colleges, prep schools, etc., reads a lot, and
many types of fiction do well here.
Best from Boston,
Jerry
