I'm going to make a special case for Chandler. If you look at
him not just as a series writer but a modernist writer as
well then you can join all the books together to form a book
of Joycean magnitude. I think things look different then.
_Playback_, the worst book (IMHO) is just a brief dip in
quality in what is otherwise a masterpiece of internal
characterization. Chandler's vision of Marlowe is, I think,
as a Leopold Bloom of private detection and LA. I don't think
you can say that of Spenser, or Scudder.
