RARA-AVIS: Landsdale & Tonto & Rush Limbaugh

All the talk of sidekicks reminded me of a funny story Joe Lansdale told at the recent Bouchercon. As most of you are probably aware, Joe has quite a reputation in the comics world. Those he's written are great fun, very quirky, very "Lansdale."

Anyway back in the mid-90s, Joe wrote a short series of Lone Ranger and Tonto comics. Always a huge Lone Ranger/Tonto fan, this was Joe's opportunity to explore complexities in their relationship.

In the first panel, Tonto slugs The Lone Ranger. Knocks him flat and walks off saying "Stay away from me. Forever...kemo sabe."

Rush Limbaugh had a television show back in those days. He held up the comic, turned to the offensive page and declared "This is what's wrong with America!"

Joe may be as proud of that as he is the Edgar.
