I received from UPS today Parker's latest (I think) novel,
DEATH IN PARADISE (2001), the third in the Jesse Stone
series. (The Jesse Stone books are the only Parkers I buy new
anymore, nevermind hardcover.)
Anyway, I've read the first chapter. It's only three pages,
so it didn't take long, even for me. It's one of the best
opening chapters I've ever read. It's nice to see that Parker
can still do it, when he cares to.
Does anyone else think that Parker might benefit from some
short story writing? I keep thinking that if he were forced
to concentrate on the essentials and trim the fat, he could
really produce some good stuff.
I also received HOPE TO DIE (2001), the new Matt Scudder from
Lawrence Block. I keep hearing good things about this one,
and as Block is certainly one of my favorites, I hope it
lives up to its reputation.
