The overall impression does remain pretty much the same. There are some changes in emphasis that are fairly interesting if you are a fan of the film and know it pretty well.

The most interesting change is what is revealed when Mancini's soundtrack is stripped off the famous opening shot to reveal the ambient sounds. The car radio fades in and out as it gets nearer or farther away from Heston and Leigh, so you are more aware of its position. This does a nice job of raising the suspense.
