Carrie, take a look at Metress, Christopher. _The Critical Response to Dashiell Hammett_. Wesport CT: Greenwood, 1994. ISBN 0313289387.

There's some fairly heavy academic stuff in there, but also more general Hammett information, and reviews of the books.
