hyphens.
I rather like this suggestion. I read somewhere that Chandler
was keenly aware that he might be too "English" to write
American idiom successfully--hence long stints in hotel
lobbies, bars, etc. to get it right. Course the result was a
style that is neither strictly American or English--something
unique, that might not have evolved otherwise.
