Good words, and thanks for plugging libraries.
Actually, most libraries now use OCLC/WorldCat for their
interlibrary loans. WorldCat is a national database and lets
us see what's where, in the US and outside of the US. So with
a few keystrokes we can search the libraries of the US and
(usually) borrow books from anywhere.
If you're looking for a particular title I'd be happy to do a
search for you on WorldCat.
