Didn't Cannon (both the writer and the character) say that he was drunk 25 hours a day? That's something!

Booze and drugs: Hunter Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is written in a hardboiled style.

Booze: Kenneth Fearing's "Dagger of the Mind" that Chandler so admired is set in the rehab center of some kind. Those guys drink.
