Bill,

I'm a fan of Gores', especially the DKA books. That said, I enjoyed Contract, but it's not the best in the series. If you want humor, 32 Cadillacs is great. If you want darker, investigatory, PI procedurals, go to the first few in the series.

Motherless Brooklyn is definitely not a series. And, in fact, it is Lethem's only pure form (well, as pure as he gets) crime novel. However, you may want to check out his first book, Gun With Occasional Music which, following a Chandler simile, opens with a kangaroo in a trenchcoat. Now I'm am most definitely not a fan of books which fuse hardboiled with speculative fiction, but this one works.
