Mario, you've put your finger on why American Tabloid left me cold. To me it was just Ellroy doing Ellroy. And as far as denser, I'd say yes, but not in the sense he sems to mean it, of more depth, but in the sense of obtuse, which brings us right back to Jess's and my two takes on the word impenetrable.
