For Gary and all you other completists who just can't live without it, Doc Smith's p.i. novel is HAVE TRENCHCOAT--WILL TRAVEL. I just can't pass up this chance to quote the opening sentence: "My secretary, Jill Grant--twenty0four, fifv-five, one-twenty, thirty-seven-twenty-four-thirty-six, golden blond, blue-eyed, peaches-and-cream--is both attractive and efficient." You gotta love it.

And to add a little fuel to one or another of the first that burn here now and then, here's a sentence from the intro: "This is a hard-boiled adventure-mystery, somewhat in the pattern established by Dashiell Hammett and Carroll John Daly, big names in their day."
