Macdonald's books, early or late, are ALL good. That's a scientific fact. Now perceived hardboiledness (Palpable Hardbolicity for Latin lovers) is a different matter.

It just occurred to me that we ONLY discuss good writers here. From good all the way up to GREAT. This all caps business is addictive.
