john dos passos, if i recall my hemingway lore correctly, got involved in the spanish civil war and wrote a book about it... something with the word "earth" in the title. and i believe that dos passos and ernest had some kind of falling out during the war, too. hemingway's spanish civil war book was the well-received (except maybe by that darling virginia woolfe girl) _for whom the bell tolls_. robert jordan gets the girl
(what's he call her? my little rabbit? hahaha.) and blows up the bridge.
