The Archer series really comes into its own around
_The Galton Case_. That's when Ross Macdonald began working his distinctive themes: the persistence of evil, the examination of dysfunctional families, the way old crimes haunt the next generation.

It's very quiet and at times self-conciously literary. Not everybody likes it, but count me in as one of R. Macdonald's biggest fans. I particularly recommend
_The Chill_ and _ Black Money_.
