RARA-AVIS: Ross Thomas & other stories

He passes the supreme test for a prolific writer: every book he wrote is worth the time it takes to read and withstands the rigors of a rereading. Never understood why he wasn't elevated to Household Word status.

Re: George Pelecanos: Think he leaves his contemporaries standing in the road, as we say in the South. His writing is genuine, a quality that's hard to achieve this late in the mystery game.

A note about The Woman Chaser, the movie: It will be broadcast, in opulent b&w, on The Sundance Channel, March 30, at 9 p.m.
