Scudder TOO quiet? I think he is for the length that Block writes. I just read "Even the Wicked" recently, which I enjoyed, but it seemed more like an extended character sketch for an older, wiser Scudder. If you look at it, it's really three seperate stories, with only two of them really tied together. I kept wondering how these would have worked out if they had been 3 shorter books instead of one. But then I've always liked my PI fic short and bittersweet.

But does that mean I'd prefer Spillane's "I, the Jury", loud, short, and to the point? Nah. I read Spillane when I want to go for a ride. Kind of like I listen to Metallica when I'm in a rowdy mood, and Stevie Ray Vaughan when I want to turn it down a bit.
