Barzun and Taylor were academics and brought their own likes
to A Catalog of Crime. Along with that they brought their
biases and dislikes. Hardly anyone who looks at the reference
today doesn't find dozens of remarks to quarrel with. And
those of the hardboiled persuasion will fine even more. This
was once thought to be a cornerstone reference work.
I loved Etienne Borger's "Always Outnunbered." Sounds like a
convent of contemplatives ready to take over the town.
