In my opinion, Anderson's SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL ranks with Gus Hasford's THE SHORT TIMERS (the basis of Kubrick's FULL METAL JACKET) and Robert Stone's DOG SOLDIERS (the basis of the movie WHO'LL STOP THE RAIN) as the best novels about the American experience in Vietnam. I can't recommend SYMPATHY enough, although you will feel like having a stiff drink or two after you've finished it.
