The knighthood theme is one of the most prevalent and
enduring in hard-boiled fiction: tarnished knights,
disillusioned knights, self parodying knights, even psycho
knights like Ellroy's Bud White, or Vachss's Burke. The
character form provides a platform for exploring the value of
protecting the helpless (especially women and children)
allegiance to a person or cause, heroism, loyalty, and/or
redemption, all mother's milk to the genre. Open any three or
four hard-boiled novels-you'll find at least one
knight.
