Well, it was a little hokey when
Chandler did it and over the top hokey when Big Mac did
it.....but of course Hammett enunciated the code aspect
pretty well in _Red Harvest_ and _Maltese Falcon_. I wouldn't
be surprised, though, if you could drum up a story where Race
Williams got explicit on the
"knight" metaphor.
