Hmm ... maybe what happened was that the grimness of the
ending surprised me, like it did you, but looking back I
could see how the events led up to it, where you thought they
didn't and that the ending didn't work. I felt like things
were working on two layers through the book, and the
undercurrents came to the top at the end.
