IIRC, the voice-over was imposed on the film by the studio,
against Kubrick's wishes, as the studio bosses felt the film
would be too confusing otherwise.

Thanks for the info. I know a lot of the film's action is
meant to take place at the same time, so I guess the
voice-over is supposed to keep us straight. The studio -- as
you say -- thought our attention would wander. Funny, they
did the same thing with Blade Runner . . .
