The only thing I can add to Gary's excellent post about Mike Shayne's history is that Davis Dresser supposedly killed off Phyllis Shayne because he'd sold the movie rights to the series and the movie people wanted Shayne to be single. Don't know if that story is true or not, but I've heard it for years.
