Agreed. The naturalistic vein of JM Cain! There is another very good novel by Cain, unjustly forgotten: GALATEA. The story of an obese praying mantis .... Worth to search for it.

However if you look for other novels from his long production, beware. Some are really dull. But here and there you could find a gem besides the 4 tiles you mention. Galatea is one of them.
