I haven't read all of them yet, but I think the Nick Stefanos trilogy (Firing Offense, Nick's Trip, Down by the river...) would fit in between The Sweet Forever and Shame the Devil making the order

The Big Blowdown (40s/50s) King Suckerman (70s) The Sweet Forever (80s) A Firing Offense, Nick's Trip, Down by the River... (early 90s) Shame the Devil (late 90s)
