I've been waiting for somebody else to answer the "pants"
question, because I don't really know about it -- I _think_
it probably derives from "pants down" - embarrassing,
therefore embarrassingly awful.
And "lads' culture" is precisely "football hooligan" --
international, drinking, vomiting, fighting in the streets
and all.
