Jason,

Here are a few suggestions - none of these are truly hard boiled . . .

Mysteries:

THE LONG NIGHT OF WHITE CHICKENS by Francisco Goldman (1992) set in the 1980's
- about an expat who returns to Guatemala to look into the death of a girl he knew

BODY OF TRUTH by David Lindsey (1992) maybe your best bet - Houston homicide detective Stuart Haydon flies to Guatemala to locate the daughter of a businessman

THE FIGHTING MEN by Gerald Seymour (date?) mercenaries

More fiction: HUMMINGBIRD HOUSE by Patricia Henley (1999) award winner, more of a love story SILENT WING by Jose Raul Bernardo (1998) historical fiction

Also some nonfiction that may be of interest -

SACRED MONKEY RIVER: A CANOE TRIP WITH THE GODS by Christopher Shaw (2000)

TIME AMONG THE MAYA: TRAVELS IN BELIZE, GUATEMALA, AND MEXICO by Ronald Wright
(1989)

and, a novel written for grades 7-9, but pretty good - AMONG THE VOLCANOES by Omar S. Castenada (1991) about a Mayan girl
