RARA-AVIS: To be or not to be pulp

Some of the books that Pronzini and Greenberg call "pulp" (PEYTON PLACE, THE CAINE MUTINY) are what I've always thought of as pop (short for popular) fiction. They really don't seem to me to have the pulp spirit.
