RARA-AVIS: From the edge of the urban wilderness...

Hi,

I'm an author and I'm new to this list. My name is not really Hank Quinlan, but I do live in the outskirts of a border town.

My interest in Film Noir and Hardboiled fiction goes back to the early 50s, when I was living in Los Angeles, although I didn't know particular films as "Noir" then; I was fascinated by The Asphalt Jungle, The Killing, The Killers, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, The Stranger, & the writings of Chandler. It had a real relevance to my own life at the time - I too felt the sense of worthlessness, the discovery of moral decay, and I had been used and abused by too many femme fatales.

So I made a solo journey across the USA in the winter of 1957 at the age of 22, driving my old chevy through to New York. It was a lonely trip, and fraught with experiences which have impacted upon my drastically. I wrote a diary at the time, and am now planning to base a noirish novel on those reflections, and hopefully start a film based on this.

Has anyone else here attempted to write a noir novel? If anyone is interested, I'll post my basic story outline and you can give me some advice.

Thanks, Hank Quinlan.
