I may out of place, but I have to say that one of the
major problems that I've found with academic treatments of
the mystery genre is that the author hasn't read
enough--s/he's tried only the 2 or 3 best or most famous
works by an author. Ross Macdonald, for example, reads
quickly. Why not have the Ph.D. candidate read the entire
oeuvre? His dissertation, or oral comps, will be much
better.
