RARA-AVIS: Cat Noir and Dog Noir

One of the clearest associations I can think of between noir and cats is the 1942 film _This Gun For Hire_ starring Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake. Ladd' s character, "Raven," is a vicious hit-man whose sentimental side is only revealed when it comes to cats. He empathises with them as fellow outsiders, loners, predators. The movie has two key scenes with Ladd and cats.

To give equal time to Noir pooches, the wonderful new film _Ghost Dog_ features Forrest Whitaker as a modern urban samurai who has a mystical connection with a dog almost as expressive as he is.
