I prefer the noir-ness of dogs: James Ellroy, "Demon Dog" of Crime Fiction, NIGHT DOGS by Kent Anderson, McGruff The Crime Dog, Keller's dog, Marlowe as "Doghouse Reilly", the bulldog in Crumley's LAST GOOD KISS, etc...

Cats just kinda sit there. Dogs bite.
