I heard it was because of all the people in the publishing "middle" that have to take a cut, so to make money, jack the price. Which is why the new ideas on Publishing on demand, and the internet allowing small presses to reach a bigger audience, are such good advances to help bring costs down.

On topic, because high prices are a CRIME!
