I also just received this book -Oxford companion to crime and
mystery writing- and am quite surprised by it. Since the tone
is very classy (as in British upper class), I did a count on
the contributors. I came up with this: 54 English
contributors, 150 American. 7 Canadian, 2 Italian, 2
Netherlands, and one each from Norway, Scotland, Japan, South
Africa, France, Sweden, Australia. I also counted those who
were profs or ex-profs and came up with 124. There were 106
who had other professions and I counted the numerous
