titles in a single book. I know Pelecanos was trying to convey a time and a place, but I got a little tired of the "he turned up the V on the big {brand name) stereo" sentences.

I thought it was great, simply because no one else was trying anything really similar in the field. And face it: Americans are big on materialism and brand names and have been for a long time, so to see that reflected in this way was funny, interesting, and I thought it did make the period seem more real than if he were to use broader things to define a decade. He was defining it the way these characters lived it.
