Why doesn't someone ask Rudolfo Anaya? His 'Sonny Baca' character is the great grandson (?) of Elfego? In the series, Sonny Baca definitely identifies himself as a Mexican American. I would venture a guess that Elfego considered himself Mexican (by heritage not by nationality) as people of that generation did.

However un-politically correct as it may seem, all of my friends call themselves Mexican and are very proud of it. This is a cultural designation unrelated to nationality.
