Speaking of series exhaustion, I seem to remember reading somewhere that Loren Estleman had initially made a rule that he would never carry a character for more than 7 books. He rethought this rule when he reached that magic number with Amos Walker.

Perhaps it is a good rule, not just for him, but for all series writers. Stark's Parker is among the very few series that really works past that number and even in this case, the early ones were the best.
