The rumor goes that Robert B. Parker originally wrote this
Spenser story for Playboy, which rejected it. "Surrogate" was
published as a limited edition booklet from Lord John Press
in 1982. This booklet is now a collectors' item. And Gallery
reprinted it in the private eye special issue in 1982. I
believe I have this issue somewhere. I think I saw this story
reprinted in some anthology. I will look around. Okay, I have
found it reprinted in NEW CRIME 3, edited by Maxim Jakubowsky
(London Robinson, 1991).
