Gotta be CASINO ROYALE. I never read COLONEL SUN.

Colonel Sun also has a terrifically brutal torture sequence -- Amis deliberately set out to outdo Fleming's Casino Royale scene. Sun's approach is different, however; he specifically avoids the genitals.

Colonel Sun was/is the best non-Fleming James Bond novel, nicely evoking Fleming while subtly humanizing the character, although the current author, novice novelist Raymond Benson, has been doing some nice, solid work. John Gardner's novels, were, in my opinion, uniformly mediocre -- but they kept the franchise alive through the Eighties.
